After a low turn for admissions to engineering courses this year, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) now plans to open the admission process all over again.

The plan aims to fill up vacant seats as only 70,953 students had confirmed their admissions at the end of the third round of seat allocation against the 1.35 lakh available seats.

The DTE has sought permission from the state government to reopen the admission process for students who missed the first round of application or were disqualified from the admission process for various reasons.

“Since we have a lot of vacancy after the first three rounds, we want to give those students a chance who had missed out in the first round,” said Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director, DTE.

As per the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admissions and Fees) Act, he said, there was no provision for reopening the admission process. However, if the state government grants permission, the DTE can invite fresh applications.

“The date for inviting applications will be finalised only after the state government agrees to our proposal,” said Meshram.

Admissions closed Monday after the third round of allocation and the DTE saw most number of admissions in Pune — around 29,000. In Mumbai, more than 16,500 candidates had taken admission. Only 4,400 candidates were admitted to colleges in Amravati.

A fourth round will be conducted where candidates already enrolled in the admission process can make changes to their preference. According to an official in the DTE, the fourth round will also include the 39,000 candidates who had either not been allotted a seat or had not approached the college for admissions. The round scheduled on July 26 might be delayed, though, said officials.
